World Cup 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before You Predict
Danny Taylor
Football Analyst
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is unlike any before it. For the first time in tournament history, 48 national teams will compete across 104 matches, hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Format Explained
The expanded format means more prediction opportunities than ever before. Group stages now feature 12 groups of four teams — meaning 48 group matches before the knockout rounds begin.
Unlike the 32-team format used since 1998, the 2026 group stage has no best third-placed teams advancing to the knockouts. The top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams progress — but that makes every group match critical.
Host Cities & Venues
The tournament spans 16 cities across three countries:
United States: New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Kansas City, Houston, Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Denver Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey Canada: Toronto, Vancouver
The Stars to Watch
Argentina (Defending Champions) — Lifted the trophy in 2022, and with Lionel Messi's international future uncertain beyond 2026, this may be his final World Cup appearance. Argentina remain the team to beat in South America.
France — Coming off a 2024 European Championship campaign, Les Bleus have one of the deepest squads in the tournament. Their midfield is generational.
Brazil — Always a favourite. The Selecão enter every World Cup as contenders and 2026 is no different.
England — A generation of world-class talent, still searching for their first major tournament win since 1966.
The Dark Horses
Morocco — Reached the semi-finals in 2022 and have only strengthened since. Their defensive organisation is exceptional.
Portugal — With a generational talent in Bruno Fernandes and a solid supporting cast, they could go far.
Croatia — Always dangerous in tournament environments. Their experience in knockout football is second to none.
